The Texas Beach Ultimate Fest (TBUF) once again rocked Galveston’s East Beach on June 14th. TBUF, the oldest beach ultimate tournament in the world was originally called Death on the Beach, and it was first hosted in 1986 on Surfside Beach, south of Galveston
This year was one of TBUF’s biggest tournaments ever with a total of 44 teams - 20 in the competitive pool and 24 in the recreational pool. The Texas heat was at its finest with temps rising into the mid-90’s. Teams refueled by consuming over 50 pizzas, 80 gallons of water, 1 keg and 15 gallons of margaritas. All of this adds up to one of the best values in ultimate when you consider cost/point and other amenities.
In the competitive division, after pool play and a cross-over game, teams were reseeded. The top 4 teams moved into the cash elite bracket, the next best 8 teams played for the competitive bracket championship, and the final 8 teams played for the consolation title. Austin’s Fruit Basket came away with top honors taking the cash prize in the elite bracket final over the Globetrotters. Houston’s Humid won in convincing fashion to be crowned the competitive bracket champions, while Houston’s LoCash rounded out the top 20 teams with a win in the consolation final.
The recreational division was larger than ever this year with 24 teams. After pool play and a cross-over game, the teams were reseeded into 3 brackets of 8 teams that played out to the finals in each division. Top recreational bracket honors went to Wannaleya who took home some sweet TBUF t-shirts for their booty.
Next year, plans are in place to make TBUF bigger and better than ever. The goal is to have 32 fields to accommodate 64 total teams with a 50/50 split between competitive and recreational. In 2009, the cash bracket will be expanded to attract some of the best teams in Texas and throughout the country. TBUF is quickly becoming one of the biggest and best beach tournaments in America, so look to sign up in 2009!
